Sunscreen is a major must-have during these exuberantly sunny summer months. Skin protection should always be in mind, especially during the summer when our sun exposure increases and is almost unavoidable.
Sunscreen that has an SPF is the best choice. In my house, the only choice. Without SPF you’re basically applying expensive lotion. Ridiculous.
According to Dictionary.com, SPF stands for;
“1. Sun Protection Factor: the effectiveness of suntanning preparations in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, as rated on a scale of increasing protectiveness from 2 to 15 or sometimes higher.”
SPF is what blocks the harmful UVB (ultraviolet B) from entering your skin, but CANNOT block UVA (ultraviolet A) rays. UVA rays are those that go deep into the skin, while UVB rays affect the outer skin layer.
“Sunscreen with the highest SPF is always the best!” -Everyone EVER
Well what do you know. What you have been told your WHOLE life is a lie. Let me explain with a little science:
As said by these specialists, SPF 30 sunscreen is only 3% more effective at blocking UVB rays than an SPF 15 sunscreen blocking 94% of UVB rays emitted. Beyond SPF 30 the protection percentages are BARELY higher… We’re talking tenths and hundredths of a percent higher. Most dermatologists recommend SPF 30 because it blocks almost all of the UVB rays it can, and there really is NO sunscreen that offers 100% protection.
Another pointer on the topic of sunscreen; always apply sunscreen at least one hour prior to sun exposure. That one hour gives your skin time to absorb the sunscreen to give you maximum protection. Also, reapply sunscreen every hour for the best results. Nobody likes a sunburn, so keep on lathering up with that SPF!
In case of sunburn, treat with aloe vera lotion and avoid further exposure to the sun until your skin can heal. Over exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can lead to sun spots, which can become skin cancer without proper prevention and treatment. Pretty serious stuff, so always always always wear sunscreen when having fun in the sun! Have an amazing, hopefully sunburn-free summer, lovelies!
